Tire pressure is one of the most overlooked aspects of car maintenance β€” and one of the most impactful. Incorrect tire pressure affects your fuel economy, handling, braking distance, tire wear, and safety. The good news: checking and correcting tire pressure takes less than five minutes and costs nothing beyond a basic gauge.

Why Tire Pressure Matters

Safety

Underinflated tires are a leading cause of blowouts, especially at highway speeds. Low pressure causes the tire sidewall to flex excessively, generating heat that can lead to sudden failure. Overinflated tires have a smaller contact patch with the road, reducing grip and increasing braking distances.

Fuel Economy

Every 1 PSI drop in tire pressure reduces fuel economy by approximately 0.2%. With all four tires 5 PSI low, you're losing around 4% of your fuel efficiency β€” adding up to real money over time.

How to Find the Right Pressure for Your Car

The correct tire pressure for your vehicle is not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall β€” that's the maximum the tire can handle, not the recommended operating pressure. Find your vehicle's recommended pressure on:

  • The sticker inside the driver's door jamb (most reliable)
  • The owner's manual
  • The fuel filler door (some vehicles)

Most passenger cars run between 30–35 PSI. Some vehicles specify different pressures for front and rear tires.

How to Check Tire Pressure Correctly

  1. Check pressure when tires are cold β€” before driving or after the car has sat for at least 3 hours. Driving heats the air inside the tire and raises pressure by 4–6 PSI, giving a false reading.
  2. Remove the valve cap and press the gauge firmly onto the valve stem.
  3. Read the pressure and compare to your vehicle's specification.
  4. Add air if low, or release air if over-inflated using the small pin on the back of most gauges.
  5. Replace the valve cap.

How Often to Check

Check tire pressure at least once a month and before any long trip. Tires naturally lose 1–2 PSI per month. Temperature changes also affect pressure β€” pressure drops approximately 1 PSI for every 10Β°F decrease in temperature, so fall and winter require more frequent checks.

Don't Forget the Spare

Your spare tire is useless if it's flat when you need it. Check spare tire pressure every time you check your regular tires. Most full-size spares use the same pressure as your regular tires; compact spares typically require 60 PSI.
